At a personal level most of us would recognise that when we go through a sudden change in our life, we go through a ‘change cycle’. Originally developed by Dr Elizabeth Kubler-Ross as a ‘grief-cycle’, it is now recognised that people undergoing any significant change will experience stages along the lines of shock, denial, anger, depression, acceptance and integration.
To keep pace with changing trends in the World and technology, businesses also need to change - often called reinvention. And because businesses are constructed from people as well as the enablers that support them, businesses will go through the same kind of ‘change cycle’. Managing change from within a business only is a great challenge and one that most businesses recognise that they need help with.
Apart from the obvious advantage of not operating within the hierarchical structure, external agents for change can sometimes be the focal point for peoples’ negative feelings towards the change. They can bring experience from other businesses’ change to bear and will recognise the tell-tale signs of people in different stages of the change cycle depending on their perspective of the change and support them through the stages.
